What You Should Eat After the Age of 50 To Reduce the Chances of Depression Later in Life

A 2024 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health, and Aging found that people who ate more fruits, especially oranges, tangerines, bananas, papayas, and watermelons, had a 29% lower risk of developing depression over a span of about 20 years. While vegetables are often recommended for overall health, they didn’t seem to have the same effect on reducing depression in this study. Researchers suggest that eating fruits raw may help preserve antioxidants and other important nutrients, which can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress—two factors linked to depression.
