Renowned for his versatile performances and relatable characters, Vikrant Massey announced his indefinite retirement from acting during the closing ceremony of the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28. Receiving the prestigious Indian Film Personality of the Year Award, Massey reflected on his career and compared his journey to his character Manoj Kumar Sharma from 12th Fail (2023), emphasizing the importance of restarting in life.
Shortly after, Massey took to Instagram, sharing:
“The past few years have been phenomenal, but it’s time to recalibrate and return home as a husband, father, son, and actor. In 2025, we will meet one last time—until the time is right again.”
Career Milestones and Recent Success
At 37, Vikrant Massey is at the height of his career, delivering back-to-back hits like 12th Fail, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (2024), Sector 36 (2024), and The Sabarmati Report (2024). The Sabarmati Report, based on the 2002 Godhra train incident, sparked nationwide discussions and earned praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders. The film has been declared tax-free in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana, further cementing its impact.
While the film brought him accolades, it also stirred debate among fans, with some criticizing a perceived ideological shift in Massey’s choices. Earlier this year, the actor issued a public apology for a 2018 tweet linked to the Kathua gangrape case, reiterating his respect for all communities.
A Multi-Faceted Actor with a Grounded Persona
Born into a multi-faith family, Vikrant Massey’s upbringing has deeply influenced his perspective and career. With a Sikh mother, Christian father, and a Rajput Hindu wife, his life embodies cultural harmony. His memorable roles in Balika Vadhu (2009-10), A Death in the Gunj (2017), and Lootera (2013) have earned him widespread acclaim for their depth and relatability.
Speaking at IFFI 2024, Massey described himself as a “storyteller at heart,” stating:
“I choose scripts that give a voice to common people. Embrace your stories and roots.”
From TV Stardom to Big-Screen Acclaim
Vikrant Massey began his career as a dancer, debuting in the TV series Dhoom Machaao Dhoom (2007). His role in Balika Vadhu brought him recognition, paving the way for his transition to films like Chhapaak (2020) and Haseen Dillruba (2021). His most successful theatrical release, 12th Fail, resonated widely after its Disney+ Hotstar release in 2024.
Is It a Farewell or a New Chapter?
Massey’s decision to take a break might seem abrupt, but his statements hint at careful planning. Ahead of receiving his award at IFFI, he shared in a video:
“I am Vikrant Massey—my past, present, and future. There is so much more to achieve. Just wait and watch.”
Fans eagerly await his next steps as he prepares to conclude this chapter in 2025
