In a surprising late-night address, South Korea‘s President Yoon Suk Yeol announced martial law on Tuesday, accusing the opposition Democratic Party of supporting pro-North Korea activities and engaging in anti-state behavior. This announcement comes amid rising political tensions in the nation.
Reasons Behind Martial Law Declaration
President Yoon criticized the Democratic Party for initiating motions to impeach top prosecutors and rejecting a government budget proposal. He referred to these actions as “clear anti-state behavior aimed at inciting rebellion.” Yoon accused the opposition, which holds a majority in parliament, of “paralyzing state affairs” and turning the National Assembly into “a den of criminals.”
Yoon justified martial law as essential to combating “shameless pro-North anti-state forces,” safeguarding public freedoms, and ensuring national stability for future generations.
Parliament Blocked Amid Escalating Tensions
Reports reveal that lawmakers are unable to access the National Assembly due to blocked entrances. While the parliament speaker is attempting to convene a session, local broadcasters YTN and Yonhap news agency highlight increasing tensions over the parliament’s current state of dysfunction.
Opposition Blamed for Nation’s Disorder
President Yoon accused the Democratic Party of causing nationwide disruption, including turning South Korea into a “drug haven” and compromising public safety. He claimed the opposition is attempting to dismantle the country’s liberal democratic system, stating, “The National Assembly has become a monster undermining democracy, and the nation is teetering on the brink of collapse.”
Assurance of Stability Despite Inconvenience
While acknowledging the potential disruptions caused by martial law, President Yoon assured citizens of efforts to minimize public inconvenience. He reiterated his commitment to swiftly eliminating anti-state elements and restoring national stability.
