Pakistan is set to launch its first fully digital transport system in Rawalpindi, a groundbreaking development in the country’s public transport infrastructure. According to a national report, the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) is spearheading the project, overseeing the creation of the necessary software to power this innovative initiative.
The digital system includes the establishment of a control room and the installation of an e-tag system at the Pirwadhai Bus Terminal. This system will collect and track comprehensive data on vehicles, such as registration details, ownership, vehicle color, fitness certifications, driver’s licenses, route numbers, and real-time GPS tracking information.
The control room will monitor all vehicles entering and exiting the terminal, ensuring only those meeting strict safety and service standards can leave. Modeled after successful digital transport systems in global cities like Paris, London, and various cities in the U.S., this will be the first fully digital public transport system in Pakistan. If successful, it is expected to expand to other cities across Punjab.
This new digital transport system in Rawalpindi will also enable citizens to file online complaints regarding public and government transport services, enhancing user feedback and service quality. Rashid Ali, Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), called the project a major leap forward, improving efficiency and safety in public transportation.
The Punjab Government is providing technical and IT support, with senior officials from the IT and Transport departments planning a visit to Rawalpindi on September 2 to finalize the details of the system’s implementation
