South Africa’s Miss Universe representative, Mia le Roux, has officially withdrawn from the 2024 Miss Universe finals in Mexico, citing health concerns. The announcement was made by pageant organisers, marking a significant moment for South Africa’s beauty pageant community.
In an emotional statement, Roux said, “Making this decision was incredibly tough, especially knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me.”
Le Roux, 28, made history in August 2024 as the first deaf woman crowned Miss South Africa. Her victory was groundbreaking but came with its share of controversy. During the competition, another finalist withdrew following backlash related to her Nigerian heritage. Despite the challenges, the Miss South Africa organisation reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Mia le Roux throughout her recovery journey.
“We care deeply for her well-being and wish her a swift return to full health,” the organisation stated. Mia le Roux expressed her gratitude for the chance to prioritise her recovery, saying, “I am thankful for this time to regain my strength and continue serving my country.”
While specific details of Mia le Roux’s health issues remain undisclosed, organisers praised her for displaying immense courage and resilience. “Our hearts are with her as she takes the steps necessary for her recovery,” they added.
Mia le Roux had eagerly anticipated the Miss Universe competition, hoping to highlight South Africa’s vibrant diversity on the global stage. Diagnosed with severe hearing loss at the age of one, she has relied on a cochlear implant to experience sound and communicate effectively.
