Eric Adams Indicted Following Federal Corruption Investigation

Eric Adams, the 110th mayor of New York City and a retired police captain, has been indicted in a federal corruption investigation, according to sources familiar with the matter. Adams, who was elected nearly three years ago on a promise to reduce crime, now faces charges that remain undisclosed as the indictment was sealed as of Wednesday evening. The investigation reportedly involves illegal foreign contributions linked to his campaign and alleged cooperation with the Turkish government.

Once the indictment is unsealed, Eric Adams will become the first sitting New York City mayor to face federal charges. Details regarding his surrender to authorities are still unclear, but federal prosecutors are expected to reveal more information today. The indictment could significantly impact his administration and add pressure as Adams gears up for a competitive mayoral primary just months away.

The timing of the indictment is notable, as it coincides with New York City hosting international leaders, including Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for the United Nations General Assembly this week. The situation has brought heightened attention to Eric Adams and his administration at a time when the city is under global scrutiny.

In response, Eric Adams released a video statement on Wednesday, strongly denying any wrongdoing. “I’ve always understood that standing up for New Yorkers would make me a target—and that’s exactly what I’ve become,” he stated. “If charges are filed against me, I will fight them with every ounce of my strength and prove my innocence.”

Brendan R. McGuire and Boyd M. Johnson III, both attorneys from WilmerHale who represent Eric Adams, declined to comment on the matter. Similarly, the federal agencies involved in the investigation—including the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the FBI, and the city’s Department of Investigation—have also refrained from making any statements regarding the indictment.
