The New York Jets announced they have parted ways with Robert Saleh, just one day after team owner Woody Johnson reportedly met with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Despite the timing of the meeting, Rodgers had no involvement in the decision to terminate Saleh. Johnson clarified during a conference call on Tuesday that no one other than himself played a role in the firing.
Aaron Rodgers has yet to make a public statement regarding Saleh’s dismissal. Although he was initially scheduled to appear on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, Rodgers postponed his appearance to Wednesday. Tensions between Rodgers and Robert Saleh have been building throughout the season, marked by several on-field incidents that have fueled speculation about their relationship.
One notable moment occurred during the Jets’ Week 3 victory over the New England Patriots, when Rodgers was seen dismissing a hug attempt from Robert . The head coach later explained that Rodgers’ reaction was due to his focus on maintaining the team’s lead. Robert Saleh told reporters, “We talked about securing a two-score lead for the defense, and when we did that, I guess he was just reminding me.”
Rodgers also shared his perspective on the incident, stating that he didn’t realize Saleh was going in for a hug. “He’s not usually a hugger, so I didn’t see it coming. He’s more of a two-hand chest push guy. But we were talking about that two-score lead, so I just gave him a push and said, ‘two-score lead.’ That’s all it was.”
Despite this awkward exchange, Rodgers emphasized that he and Robert Saleh had a positive relationship. “Rob and I have had a great relationship since I joined the Jets. We have text conversations about a variety of topics outside of football, and we’ve built a solid friendship,” Rodgers mentioned during an episode of “The Pat McAfee Show.”
Saleh’s tenure as head coach ends with a 20-36 record over three seasons. The Jets are currently 2-3 after suffering a 23-17 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings in London. This season has been challenging for the Jets, as they are among the most penalized teams in the NFL.
Reports indicated that Robert Saleh was escorted out of the team’s facility by security after the announcement. The Jets are now in search of a new head coach to help the team recover and support Aaron Rodgers in his pursuit of a deep playoff run.
