The landscape of the global auto industry is undergoing a tremendous transformation as China emerges as a top contender in the electric vehicle (EV) market. Many of Europe’s leading car designers are moving to China, drawn by opportunities in its rapidly growing EV sector. This shift is boosting the reputation of Chinese car brands on the international stage.
One of the key figures behind this change is Wolfgang Egger, a design legend known for his work with luxury European brands like Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Lamborghini. Today, Egger is the chief designer at BYD, China’s leading electric car manufacturer, where he drives innovative design initiatives.
Similarly, Giles Taylor, formerly with Rolls-Royce and the designer of the iconic Phantom, has joined China’s FAW. Taylor is now focused on developing the luxury Hongqi brand, often referred to as the “Chinese Rolls-Royce,” reinforcing China’s position in the global auto industry.
Peter Horbury, a key figure in Volvo’s success, transitioned to the Chinese automotive sector following Geely’s acquisition of Volvo. Horbury’s latest project is the design of the Zeekr 001, a cutting-edge electric vehicle that reflects his visionary approach.
Other European veterans, like Stefan Sielaff, former chief designer of Bentley, and Klaus Zyciora Bischoff, a driving force behind many iconic European models, have also joined China’s auto industry. Sielaff is now with Geely, while Bischoff works at Changan, focusing on advanced electric vehicles such as the Avatr and Deepal.
China’s growing influence in the global auto industry, particularly in the EV sector, is reshaping the future of automotive design and technology. With top European talent leading design at Chinese automakers, China is quickly becoming a leader in the global electric vehicle market.
