The Punjab government has launched a province-wide fuel quality monitoring program to combat smog and improve air quality. Led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this initiative aims to ensure that only standard fuel is sold at petrol stations, helping to reduce harmful emissions during the peak smog season from October to December.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is overseeing the program as part of the government’s broader environmental strategy. Senior Minister Murriyum Aurangzeb has stressed the significance of this campaign in addressing air pollution and enhancing public health.
EPA Director General Dr. Imran Hamid Shaikh issued the directive on August 7, 2024, under the Environmental Protection Act of 1997. The EPA will conduct monthly inspections at petrol pumps across Punjab, testing fuel samples in laboratories to verify compliance with Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) standards. Petrol stations found selling substandard fuel will face severe legal action.
This fuel inspection initiative is a key part of the government’s long-term plan to reduce air pollution in Punjab and protect the environment.
